Join Shannon Bream as she welcomes award winning photographer Barry Morgenstein to discuss his fascinating new book, Rock and Soul, featuring iconic portraits from music history. As a young rock and roller with long hair who wanted to be Jimmy Page, Barry realized early on he wasn’t talented enough for a future in music, but he loved it enough to find another way in. After picking up a camera and photographing his musician friends, he started as an assistant to a big rock and roll photographer, and his very first assignment was capturing Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones and legendary guitarist Jeff Beck. Barry spent about a year going through boxes of color slides and black and white negatives, scanning thousands of images he’d forgotten about and concerts he didn’t even remember shooting. The results is a 136 page book featuring Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Steven Tyler, Chuck Berry, B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Sammy Davis Jr., Elton John, Miles Davis, and countless others. Barry shares his philosophy for young photographers: ignore rejection, because even he was told “Nope, I would never hire you” at CBS, and someone once told Elvis Presley to go back to truck driving. He discovered that the bigger the superstars, the nicer they were – with legends like McCartney, Elton John, and Sammy Davis Jr. showing humility and kindness, offering inspiration for anyone facing rejection in their field.
